Statement - Virginia Howlett
Skies
are a universal daily experience. The color, light and movement of the
sky are an intrinsic part of our connection to the natural landscape.
My work is rooted in the heroic tradition of North American landscape
painting, but I am deeply intrigued by the way distant areas of sky become
abstract color fields, moving and changing over time. I capture pieces
of sky and group them together -- juxtaposing days, times, and qualities
of light. The result is a meditative glimpse of memory, like lying on
your back watching the clouds go by.
